May’s first 10 days were pretty sweet! There were two bank holidays back to back in Luxembourg, and with just six days off, I could’ve traveled for almost two weeks. Obviously, I couldn’t pass up that opportunity. After thinking it over, I decided to go on a solo trip. And for those who know me, I’ve got fam in the US, so I figured I’d pay them a visit. Lucky for me, they’re based in San Diego, where surfing’s life. Specifically, Oceanside. I must say, my cousins are always very welcoming, and was excited to spend some quality time with them and experience the best that California has to offer
The story dates back to the 1930s, a difficult period for Italy, when many Italians decided to take a chance and immigrate to the United States, ultimately finding success. As a result, I can proudly say that my extended family spans across two continents, and we manage to reunite quite frequently.
My main objective for this trip? To surf until I can’t move. Sightseeing tours? Not for me. Visiting nearby cities? Not interested in this very moment. Sunsets and waves over the Pacific Ocean? That’s the stuff. I need to recharge my batteries, and this trip is just what the doctor ordered. I kicked off my journey from Frankfurt with Lufthansa and had a layover in Chicago. I’ve rented a car for my entire stay, and it was big enough to fit my longboard and eventually 2 when surfing with my cousin.

1) my brother, who has been living in San Diego for over five years and my cousins provided me with their invaluable insights on the best surfing spots in the area.
2) However, if I were to share all of the hidden gems that only locals know about in this blog, I might end up making some enemies among the local surf community๐ฅน. Hence, Iโll focus on everything else and on my top 3 of the most known surf spots.
A Perfect Day
As said, if you’re a surfer, there’s no better place to catch some waves than San Diego. Here’s how I spent my perfect day:
- Rise and shine at 5 am to check the latest surf report from the comfort of my bed ๐
- Based on the report, decide which beach to surf at for the day โ๏ธ
- Grab a quick breakfast to fuel up for the day ahead โ๏ธ
- Head to the water and hit the waves by 6:30 am at the latest ๐
- Surf until 10 am, enjoying the beaches and waves ๐โโ๏ธ
- Stop for a surfer’s lunch to refuel and recharge ๐ชซ
- Check the surf report again to see if an afternoon surf session is possible ๐
- If the waves are good, head back into the water for another surf session ๐โโ๏ธ
- Enjoy dinner with family ๐ฝ๏ธ
- Call it a day and head to bed by 10 pm ๐ค
Looks pretty sick, right? ๐ Well, I’m on the plane now writing this article and I can confirm that I can barely move my ENTIRE BODY.
Swamiโs
Swami’s wave is also famous for its consistency and clean conditions. Overall, Swami’s is a world-class surf spot that attracts surfers from around the globe. As I gaze upon the locals effortlessly surfing the 6-foot waves in front of this breathtaking beach, the image in my mind could only be described as a slice of paradise.
Oceanside Pier
The wave at Oceanside Pier is sick! It’s a classic beach break, so the size and shape can change on the tide and swell, but when it’s good, it’s epic! The location of this spot, right in front of the city, reminds me of those classic American TV shows I used to watch as a kid featuring surfers cruising around.
La Jolla-Scribbs
The wave at Scripps is a beach break wave that can vary in shape and size depending on the swell and tide conditions. On a good day, the wave can produce a long and fast ride. Overall, Scripps Pier is a popular surf spot for locals and visitors alike looking for a challenging and exciting surfing experience.
Anyway even in paradise, Mother Nature sometimes has other plans. On days when the waves werenโt cooperating, I took the opportunity to explore some of San Diego’s other highlights.
Salk Institute: A Feast for the Eyes
As an architecture enthusiast, I couldn’t resist visiting the Salk Institute in La Jolla. Designed by the legendary architect Louis Kahn, the building is a stunning masterpiece. The minimalist design features two symmetrical wings that flank a central courtyard. The courtyard is an oasis where researchers and visitors can relax and recharge. The use of natural materials like teak wood and concrete creates a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment.

Longboarding in Mission Beach
Located on a narrow strip of land along the Pacific Ocean, Mission Beach is a bustling neighborhood. The wide, sandy beach and lively boardwalk are the perfect setting for a day of longboarding. As you cruise along the boardwalk, you’ll pass by shops, restaurants, and amusement parks, and soak up the lively atmosphere.
Sunset at Sunset Cliffs
Sunset Cliffs is a stunning oceanfront park in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. The park offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and cliff-lined coastline. Sunset is the highlight of the day, and the park provides the perfect vantage point to watch the sun dip below the horizon.

La Jolla Cove: A Marine Wonderland
La Jolla Cove is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the natural beauty of the Pacific coastline. The crystal-clear waters are teeming with marine life, including colorful fish, sea lions, and even dolphins and whales. Whether you’re swimming, snorkeling, or just taking in the sights, La Jolla Cove is a true marine wonderland.
San Diego Padres Match
The Padres play their home games at Petco Park, a state-of-the-art ballpark located in downtown San Diego. The stadium is known for its beautiful views of the city skyline and the nearby San Diego Bay. In recent years, the Padres have undergone a rebuilding phase and have become one of the most exciting young teams in baseball.
